In a moment of quiet revolution, Ebonyi State has crossed a historic threshold as Princess Patricia Obila, the state’s Deputy Governor, officially assumed office as Acting Governor, becoming the first woman to ever do so in the state’s political history.

Her emergence follows the transmission of executive powers from Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, who is proceeding on an official leave. In line with Section 190(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Governor formally notified the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, empowering his deputy to act in his stead during his absence.

Known for her poise, administrative acumen, and deep connection with grassroots development, Princess Patricia Obila wasted no time in stepping into national discourse. Speaking at the opening of the National and Regional Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum on Irrigation in Abuja — hosted by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) — she emphasized the critical role of irrigation in boosting agricultural productivity across Nigeria and the Sahel region.

Obila praised President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in Agriculture, affirming Ebonyi’s commitment to aligning with national goals through the People’s Charter of Needs, which prioritizes food security, irrigation, and rural empowerment.

Across Ebonyi State, reactions have been swift and enthusiastic. Civil society, women’s advocacy groups, and political observers have all hailed this moment as a catalyst for increased female participation in governance. For young women and girls watching from the sidelines, the message is unmistakable: the highest offices are within reach.

Though her tenure as Acting Governor may be time-bound, the significance is timeless. Princess Obila has not just assumed office — she has redrawn the map for what’s possible in Ebonyi politics. In doing so, she’s not merely standing in for the Governor; she’s standing up for history.
