Atiku, El-Rufai, Amaechi Launch Bold Move with New Opposition Party: ADA Files for INEC Registration

ABUJA – In what may mark a dramatic shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, a formidable coalition of political heavyweights led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has formally applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register a new political party—the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).
The coalition, operating under the banner of the National Opposition Coalition Group, submitted its application on June 19. The electoral commission officially acknowledged receipt of the request on Friday, June 21. This move signals a strategic realignment of Nigeria’s opposition forces with the stated aim of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election cycle.
Backed by key political figures including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats and former aide to President Olusegun Obasanjo, the formation of ADA appears designed to tap into mounting national dissatisfaction, economic frustrations, and political disillusionment.
In a letter jointly signed by the coalition’s Protem National Chairman Chief Akin A. Rickets and Protem National Secretary Abdullahi Elayo, the group urged INEC to begin the formal process of registration. The letter reads in part:
“We respectfully write to the Independent National Electoral Commission, requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance, as a political party… sponsored by the Nigerian National Coalition Group.”
The proposed slogan of the ADA, “Justice for All,” captures what the coalition claims is a renewed push for equity, accountability, and sustainable development. Symbolically, the party’s logo features a maize (corn)—a crop historically associated with abundance and resilience, values the party says it seeks to embody.
The ADA’s documentation, now before INEC, includes its constitution, detailed manifesto, official logo, and minutes of its foundational meetings. These documents, according to party officials, outline a vision for a united, prosperous Nigeria driven by inclusive governance and transparent leadership.
Political analysts believe the timing of the ADA’s application is no coincidence. With the current administration under increasing pressure over economic stagnation, security challenges, and perceived democratic backsliding, the new party appears poised to serve as a credible alternative, potentially drawing supporters from across Nigeria’s geopolitical divides.
However, INEC recently issued a stern reminder that compliance with constitutional and legal procedures remains paramount, regardless of public sentiment or political influence. The commission reiterated that party registration processes would not be swayed by pressure or popularity, but guided strictly by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act.
Despite this, sources within the opposition bloc remain confident that ADA will pass all regulatory hurdles and emerge as a unifying platform for a broad spectrum of Nigerians eager for change.
If granted registration, ADA could mark the most significant realignment in Nigerian opposition politics since the formation of the APC in 2013—ushering in what many see as the dawn of a new political era.
